आपको अपने भीतर से विकास करना होता है . कोई आपको सिखा नहीं सकता . आपको सिखाने वाला कोई और नहीं सिर्फ आपकी आत्मा है . " स्वामी विवेकानन्द मो सम कौन कुटिल खल कामी ( सूरदास ) जो अपने सब अवगुन कहऊँ काष्ट कथा पार नहि कहऊँ ( तुलसीदास ) संत कबीर तो अपने दोष बताने वाले को सादर अपने निकट ही रखना चाहते हैं . जिससे वे अनवरत् रूप से दोष - प्रक्षालन करते रहें निदक नियरे राखिए आँगन कुटी छवाय बिनु पानी साबुन बिन निर्मल करे सुभाय । बौद्धिक स्तर पर हम अपने दोषों को देखने की और उनको दूर करने की चर्चा प्रायः कर लेते दूसरों की बुराइयों हमको एक प्रकार का आनन्द या रस आता हैं , परन्तु व्यवहार में हम की चर्चा करके अपने को अच्छा आदमी है जिसे हम निन्दा - रस कहते हैं , परन्तु जब हम उदारता की मानसिकता में होते हैं , तब हम अपने लक्ष्य के बड़े से बड़े दोष को भी नजरअंदाज करने की बात करने लगते एक दिखने में प्रयत्नशील रहते हैं जिन्हें हम सन्त या भक्त कहते हैं , वे इष्टदेव के रूप में अपना एक आदर्श हैं — यह कहकर ऐसा कोई नहीं है , जिसमें स्थापित कर लेते हैं और उसके गुणों को प्रश्न यह है कि यह कैसे पता लगे कि दोष न बताया जा सके सुन्दरता के धारण करने का प्रयत्न करते हैं . भक्तजन में सही रास्ते पर सही दरवाजे की ओर जा उपमान एवं अमृत के भण्डार चन्द्रमा में भी कालिमा के दर्शन हो जाते हैं . के इष्ट अनन्त सौन्दर्य , अनन्त शक्ति और अनन्तशील के अगाध स्वरूप को प्राप्त करने का प्रयत्न जन्म जन्मान्तर तक चलता रहता है . सदैव अपने इष्टदेव के महान् महत्व के सम्मुख का अनुभव करते हैं . इस प्रकार उनका लघुत्व इष्टदेव के महत्व की ओर निरन्तर गतिमान बना रहता है . संत का अनन्त में लय होता हुआ प्रतीत तो होता है , परन्तु ऐसा होता नहीं है जिस प्रकार क्षितिज पर पृथ्वी और आकाश मिलते हुए प्रतीत होते हैं , परन्तु मिलते नहीं हैं . हम ज्यों - ज्यों क्षितिज की ओर बढ़ते जाते हैं त्यों - त्यों वह हमसे दूर हटता जाता है . इस प्रकार विकास की प्रक्रिया दो स्तरों पर गतिमान रहती है . आदर्श पक्ष में महत्व के पक्ष में महानता के एक पर्दे के दूसरा पर्दा उठता जाता है और साधक लघुत्व के पक्ष में दोषों के परदे उठते जाते हैं . बाद सूफी संत अपने इष्टदेव को आदर्श पात्र को नारी रूप में माशूक के रूप में देखते हैं , माशूक में अनन्त गुणों का आरोप करके वे उसके अनन्त रूप सागर में अपनी खुदी बूंद का विलय करने की कल्पना में नग्न रहते हैं . यह भावनुभूति कभी - कभी इतनी गहन हो जाती है कि वे हाल की दशा में आ जाते हैं कतरा है दरिया में फना हो जाना । दर्द का हद से गुजर जाना है दवा हो सामान्यतः हमारा स्वभाव परछिद्रान्वेषण का है . हम प्रत्येक व्यक्ति में दोष खोजने का प्रयत्न करते हैं और ऐसा करते हुए हम अपना बहुत सारा समय नष्ट कर देते हैं . इतना ही नहीं पराए दोषों की चर्चा करने में उक्त उदात्त मानसिकता के प्रवाह में बहते हुए हम प्रायः दार्शनिक की भूमिका में पहुँच जाते हैं . हमारी चिन्तन - पद्धति इस प्रकार बन जाती है कि परमात्मा की महती योजना पूर्ण मानव के निर्माण की है , परन्तु अभी तक पूर्ण मानव का या दोष रहित मानव का सृजन नहीं हो पाया है , जिन्हें हम अवतारी महापुरुष कहते हैं . वे भी पूर्ण मानव नहीं थे उनके व्यक्तित्व में भी दोष थे विकास की यह प्रक्रिया न जाने कब से चल रही है और न जाने कब तक चलती जाएगी ? ऐसी स्थिति में हमारा कर्तव्य बनता है कि हम अपनी कमियों को दूर करने का प्रयत्न करें जिससे विकास की महती योजना में सहायक भी बन सकें और आत्म विकास भी कर सकें , उक्त प्रकार की मानसिकता प्रायः क्षणिक होती है , वह सागर की लहर की भाँति अनन्त में विलीन हो जाती है , परन्तु कुछ लोग ऐसे होते हैं , जो आत्म निरीक्षण एवं आत्म विकास की मानसिकता को अपने व्यक्तित्व का अंग बना लेते हैं . इन्हें हम सत , साधु , भक्त , महात्मा आदि कहते हैं . ये महापुरुष अपने दोषों को देखते ही नहीं हैं . बल्कि उनकी चर्चा करने में उनको उठा उठाकर दिखाने में आत्म - संतोष का अनुभव करते हैं , यथा जाना है अहकार को विगलित होना कहते हैं , उसको सूफी संत ' तू ' में मैं पर्यवसन हो जाना कहते हैं , उन्हें विश्व के कण - कण में माशूक के दर्शन होने लगते हैं जिस प्रकार भक्त जन चराचर जगत् में अपने स्वामी के रूप का दर्शन पाते हैं अन्तर केवल यह है कि भागवत धर्म भक्त को विश्वरूप के सेवक होने की प्रेरणा प्रदान करता है , जबकि सूफी धर्म साधक ( आंशिक ) को साध्य ( माशूक ) में लय हो जाने का आदर्श मानता है जिसको फना कह आए हैं . सूफी संत कवि मौलाना रूमी की बाँसुरी कहती है कि बन्दा माशूक के दरवाजे पर गया अन्दर से आवाज आई - कौन ? बन्दे ने कहा मैं दरवाजा नहीं खुला एक वर्ष बाद बन्दा फिर गया अन्दर से कौन की आवाज आने पर बन्दे ने जवाब दिया ' तू ' दरवाजा खुल गया . इसी तथ्य को हमारे संत एवं भक्त कवियों में अपने ढंग पर इस प्रकार व्यक्त किया है प्रेम गली , अति सौकरी जामें दो न यह दर्द इष्टदेव का निरश्रभूति दुःख होता है जिसे हम सामान्यतः अहंभाव या समाय जब मैं था . तब हरि नहीं , अब हरि हैं । मैं नाहिं । हूँ अथवा मैं इष्टदेव की ओर उन्मुख हूँ उत्तर स्पष्ट है जब मन सुशीलता की ओर आपसे आप चल पड़े तुम अपनायो तब जानिहों , जब मन फिरि परि है । ( तुलसीदास ) प्रत्येक व्यक्ति का आदर्श उसके आपने भी विकास स्तर के अनुसार होता है किसी ऐसे आदर्श की परिकल्पना की होगी . अनुरूप होगा . आपका व्यक्तित्व किस स्तर पर है . इस बात को लिए आप या हम अपने आप को अपने आदर्श के सामने खड़े होकर अपनी नापतौल करें . यह आदर्श वस्तुतः हमारे दिल का आईना है , जिसमें हमें अपनी सही और साफ तस्वीर दिखाई दे जाती है . तभी तो सूफी संत कह देते हैं जो आपके विकास जानने के टटोलें के दिल के आईने में है , तस्वीरे यार जब जरा गर्दन झुकाई देख ली । आप विकास के पथ पर हों अथवा प्रतियोगिता की तैयारी कर रहे हों आप कितने आगे बढ़ आए हैं इसका निर्णय अन्य कोई व्यक्ति नहीं कर सकता है , इसका निर्णय स्वयं आप ही कर सकते हैं कि आप कितने पानी में हैं ? शर्त यह है कि आप किसी की बाँह पकड़ कर अपने पथ पर नहीं चल रहे हैं , यदि परीक्षा / प्रतियोगिता की तैयारी करते समय आप एक निश्चित अवधि के बाद आत्म - निरीक्षण करते रहेंगे तो आपको कभी भी निराश नहीं होना पड़ेगा .
