Mimics, An Unnecessary Work, for Use With Fantasy RPGs

by Philip Reed

Avoid the $25 and higher rewards. They're the worst!

Welcome to Mimics, An Unnecessary Work. Designed as a completely worthless collection of ideas that gamemasters may turn to when tossing a mimic into their next dungeon, this title was created because I felt like jotting down some useless words that are likely as unnecessary as anything I have ever written. If you foolishly throw a handful of coins in my direction in exchange for this document, I apologize in advance. Though, to be fair, I did try to steer you away from spending your money on this creative effort: the name alone is a warning to all who might be tempted to buy this.

The second side of the opened pocket map. This side details d20 ideas for what the mimic is up to and offers up a micro-dungeon you can use to murder the adventurers.

I have divided the content of this collection of useless thoughts regarding the mimic into four camps:

  •  Making mimics magical. I must apologize in advance for the words that fill this section of the work. d13 ways in which you may modify the mimic, changing it into something more wondrous and magical. (See below image.)
  •  Mimic is imitating ideas. A 4d6 table as well as a 3d6 table, each offering some quick ideas when you're stuck with the question: What is the mimic imitating this time? (See below image.)
  •  What is that rascally mimic up to now? The reverse side of the poster, only accessible if you flip the map over in your hands, is dedicated to a multitude of encounter ideas. So the adventurers have stumbled across a mimic in the dungeon? Well, this d20 collection of incidents should be enough to get your own creative juices flowing. If not, just randomly roll on the table and make the best of a bad situation. (See above image.)
  •  A mysterious mimic’s lair. A compact, ready-to-run dungeon featuring -- you guessed it! -- a mimic! Surprise! (See above image.)

As always, everything I have put to paper should be ignored once you realize just how worthless it truly is. I am positive that your own creativity can lead to far better ideas than I’ve offered in the unnecessary work.

Front side of the pocket map. This is over 29" wide and almost 16" tall when completely opened up. The image shown is not an exact match for the final work, but it is very close. Please note that the top right and bottom left corners, in the finished work, will be cardstock "covers" adhered to the paper.

Those who have followed my creative efforts have no doubt recognized that I enjoy tackling formats well outside of the norm. I recently ran a Kickstarter campaign for Tome of Skulls (already shipped to backers!) that embraced a new product format: the Pocket Map! When I ran across pocketmaps.com, a website specializing in small maps that can fold down and slip into a pocket, I just had to give them a shot. The end result looks so good that I am back with a second product in the pocket map format!

What an ugly and worthless waste of paper. Almost 30" wide? Why? That's just dumb.
A mockup demonstrating how the pocket map works. The above image shows a ten-panel wide map; in this project, all of the expansions are eight panels wide.

Do you want even more nonsense in your life? The $3 reward (PDF), as well as the $25 and higher rewards, also includes Jiggles & Wiggles, a second pocket map the same physical size as Mimics. This second pocket map is new to this campaign and has never been offered before, so this is the perfect time to close this project page and ignore the entire campaign.

The front side of Jiggles & Wiggles gives the GM d20 ideas for what a gelatinous cube might be doing when the heroes encounter it in the dungeon. Please note that the top right and bottom left corners, in the finished work, will be cardstock "covers" adhered to the paper.

(Do you really like gelatinous cubes? You do not want to miss Gelatinous, a fast-playing dice game that was designed by the same broken mind responsible for both Mimics, An Unnecessary Work & Jiggles & Wiggles. Well, maybe you do want to miss it. After all, who needs 42 green glitter dice?)

The reverse-side of Jiggles & Wiggles includes over 120 different things you may find inside a gelatinous cube.
I designed Gelatinous, a fast-playing dice game that includes 42 12mm green glitter dice, and it is already available! Please click to learn more.

Hopefully, this project will fail and we won't have to suffer through the pain of Mimics, An Unnecessary Work, and Jiggles & Wiggles, but there's a slim chance this campaign will be a success. If that happens, we will hold out hope that we don't gather so much support that these horrible and unwanted stretch goals are unlocked.

Stretch goals do not apply to all reward levels. Please read the reward descriptions carefully, and check the itemized listing under each reward.

A third pocket map? Nooooooo!!!!! If we reach $20,000, Snowy Scenes, a PDF collection of winter encounter ideas for use with most fantasy RPGs, will be included in PDF for all reward levels at $3 and higher. Additionally, if we unlock this stretch goal, one print copy (and only one print copy) of Snowy Scenes will be included in all reward levels of $25 and higher.

Snowy Scenes, a collection of winter/arctic encounters the GM can turn to when seeking inspiration! The front side of the pocket map features 4d12 encounter ideas.

Snowy Scenes is physically the same size as Mimics and Jiggles & Wiggles, but the printed content on this map is different than what you find on those two. Better still, the creative work is complete, meaning that unlocking this stretch goal will not slow the delivery of rewards. For your sake, though, I pray that we don't unlock this stretch goal. None of you deserve to suffer through my terrible writing.

The reverse side of the Snowy Scenes stretch goal pocket map. This side details 2d20 winter encounter ideas.

A fourth pocket map? This is complete and total nonsense!!! If we hit the $32,500 mark, I'll force everyone at the $3 and higher reward level to accept a PDF copy of this drivel. Those who made the mistake of pledging at the $25 or higher reward will find themselves burdened with a print copy of this work if the stretch goal is unlocked. You get no pity from me. You brought this on yourselves.

The front side of the Dungeons pocket map. Look at all of that useless information! What a total waste of paper and ink.

Dungeons, Useless Ideas, is the same physical format and size as the three earlier pocket maps introduced as a part of this campaign, with the only changes the appearance and actual text content. I suppose if I was clever I would have simply copied/pasted text from the other three pocket maps, but I've never been all that bright.

The reverse side of Dungeons, Useless Ideas, where you'll find exactly what the title says: useless ideas for dungeons. You see the tiny white type on the lower left side of the above image? Those are words that you will be happier ignoring.

What's the best way to delay a project? Launch before all of the creative work is ready to go! So that we minimize the chance of delays, I've completed all of the creative work for the two pocket maps available at launch and the two stretch goal pocket maps.

All four pocket maps are next moving into the proofing process ! Right now, all we have to do is determine whether or not there's enough demand to make these four titles a reality and then, if the project is successful, I'll move all four into proofing.

I hope there isn't enough demand to create these, because it would be very embarrassing for me if my horrible writing and my lack of design sense escaped the computer and made their way into the real world.

Do not back this campaign!

Are you looking for even more stuff? Unless otherwise noted, the following project add-ons are PDF or print-on-demand items, with all PDFs delivered through the BackerKit survey and all print-on-demand codes delivered through BackerKit and usable at DrivethruRPG. Only the following add-ons are allowed; any print-on-demand items will be delivered as codes that you use at DrivethruRPG where you will be responsible for paying both the print cost and the shipping costs.

Click the product titles to visit DrivethruRPG and learn more about the work.

Please note that selecting the print-on-demand code for any of the following as an add-on will also include the PDF code at no extra charge.

Systemless Fantasy RPG Supplements

  •  Fantasy City Sites and Scenes - $7 PDF, $10 print-on-demand code. Estimated print-on-demand price: $10. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  Fantasy City Sites and Scenes II - $7 PDF, $10 print-on-demand code. Estimated print-on-demand price: $10. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  Fantasy City Sites and Scenes III - $7 PDF, $10 print-on-demand code. Estimated print-on-demand price: $10. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)

NOTE: Each of the above three titles may be used on their own or combined. Each one of the three includes new city locations and encounter ideas, all designed for use with almost any fantasy roleplaying game. Please click the links to learn more about each title.

  •  The Book of Collected Rumors - $10 PDF, $10 print-on-demand code. This collection of over 200 rumors -- each a full, illustrated page -- is ready for the gamemaster who needs adventure ideas or wishes to sprinkle background hooks and flavor into a campaign. Estimated print-on-demand price: $35. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  The Book of Dungeon Encounters - $7 PDF, $10 print-on-demand code. Includes 100 different dungeon encounter ideas, some of which include maps by SkeletonKey Games. Estimated print-on-demand price: $10. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)

Third Party Mörk Borg Add-Ons

  •  Deck of Corpses, A Third-Party Mörk Borg Card Deck - $3 PDF, $6 print-on-demand code card deck. A deck of 36 corpses the GM may turn to whenever the PCs stumble across yet another dead body. Why are there so many bodies in this dungeon??? Estimated print-on-demand price: $4. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  Deck of Secrets, A Third-Party Mörk Borg Card Deck - $3 PDF, $6 print-on-demand code card deck. Use this deck during character creation. Each player draws one card from the deck – making notes as appropriate on their character sheet  – and then shows it to the GM. The GM may also use this deck to add background to NPCs during a session. Regardless of how the cards are used, remove them entirely from the deck (unless the card notes otherwise) as they are drawn and used in the game. Estimated print-on-demand price: $4. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  Deck of Terribly Broken Bodies, A Third-Party Mörk Borg Card Deck - $3 PDF, $6 print-on-demand code card deck. Turn to this card deck whenever a PC is reduced to zero hit points. Instead of rolling a d4 and checking the table in the core rules, draw a single card from this deck whenever a PC reaches zero HP. Each card includes one to four skulls. These correspond with the one, two, three, and four faces of a d4 so that you can easily meld these cards with the official rules. If you check each of the cards, you’ll note that the end result is similar to the core rules for Broken bodies. These cards provide more flavor and detail, all of which may be ignored or modified as the GM wishes. Estimated print-on-demand price: $4. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)

Third-Party Troika Add-Ons

  •  Odd Occurrences!, a Third-Party Troika! Zine -  $3 PDF, $5 print-on-demand code book.   Odd Occurrences! is a collection of 36 city encounters for use with the Troika! roleplaying game. Following a virtually useless page of introduction (after all, you are bright enough to know what to do with encounter ideas), you will find a selection of d66 events to populate almost any bizarre cityscape . . . including the city from which the game takes its name! Estimated print-on-demand price: $5. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)
  •  Superfluous Spells!, a Third-Party Troika! Zine-  $3 PDF, $5 print-on-demand code book. Estimated print-on-demand price: $5. This 27-page 6" x 9" third-party Troika! zine introduces sixty completely unnecessary spells. Honestly, you do not need any of these spells. In fact, there's a strong possibility that buying this collection of spells will only lead to you reading a handful of pages and, at most, using one or two of the spells in an actual game session. (All print-on-demand prices are estimates and may change without warning; DrivethruRPG sets the print prices and changes to those prices are outside of my control.)

If you're into throwing money at me, the following items are some of what you can get depending on your exact reward level choice. Everything here is U.S. only; please see the different reward descriptions at right for the exact choices. If something isn't listed under a reward level, then it is not included in that reward level.

Did you miss Tome of Skulls, my first pocket map project! Now you can get your hands on this release along with the new Mimics expansion! This is already printed and will be shipped along with the Mimics and Jiggles & Wiggles pocket maps if you select the $41 (limited availability) reward.

The front side of the map when opened. The top right panel is the "front" cover when this is folded. The bottom left panel is the "back cover."

The Book of Unusual Potions is a 64-page saddle-stitched work that is 5.5" (wide) by 8.5" (tall) in size and includes potions, potion ingredients, and more. Presented in a systemless format, this book is for use with many fantasy roleplaying games and is as colorful in appearance as it is in the descriptions of the many potions detailed inside.

See the $40 and $75 reward levels.

Please see the Kickstarter page for more information.

Also available in PDF at DrivethruRPG.

A peek inside the first issue! All three issues are systemless, created for GMs who aren't afraid of adapting content and making the game entirely theirs.

Delayed Blast Gamemaster is a systemless fantasy RPG zine for use with most games. This gamemaster-targeted resource is packed with monsters, adventure hooks, and all sorts of random stuff. Please see the individual Kickstarter campaigns (issue oneissue two, and issue three) for sample pages and to learn more about the zine.

See the $70 and $75 reward levels.

You can find the zine in PDF today at DrivethruRPG.com.

For this campaign, I am working with BackerKit to collect addresses so that I can have your rewards shipped once manufacturing is complete. You will pay shipping costs on Kickstarter, when Kickstarter collects your pledge.

As much as I would like to sell the print rewards to the entire world, the many obstacles placed between indie creators and gamers across the planet make that too challenging to attempt. Between the stress and expense (in terms of both time and money) and the frustrations of handling lost/damaged packages on the other side of the world, it simply isn't possible to ship outside of the United States. The return (if any!) is far, far too low for the suffering required.

NOTE: The four new pocket maps shown are at the 98.9753% complete stage. There are minor edits and adjustments to each one not reflected in the sample images. The final designs are slightly different, but not too far off from what you
