Phantom Limb Company's FALLING OUT
Phantom Limb Company's FALLING OUT
by Phantom Limb Company
Phantom Limb Company is in the final stages of development of its evening length production FALLING OUT, premiering at OZ Arts Nashville and BAM's Next Wave Festival. FALLING OUT is the final piece in a trilogy of works surrounding the changing relationship of humankind and nature over time. Phantom Limb Company's work incorporates puppetry, set design, dance and original music to create vibrant worlds and gripping performances. Prior productions of 69°S and Memory Rings reached critical acclaim and played to sold out audiences.
"The web of life is under assault. Companies like Phantom Limb have conscripted miraculous puppets in this battle to defend the biosphere, and they have proven to be an impressive fighting force." - Charles McNulty LA Times
A highly anticipated and deeply researched production, FALLING OUT examines the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown that ravaged the region of Fukushima, Japan in 2011, marking the most fatal natural disaster in history. Blending puppetry with the distinct Japanese art of butoh, Phantom Limb Company collaborates with Dai Matsuoka of Sankai Juku to investigate the shared language of butoh and puppetry to express loss and life afterwards. Flex dancer Klassic Carella, in the unique language of this rising street style, brings another movement texture that strikes a deep chord in this story.
Already, Phantom Limb Company has completed several artistic residencies to build this work: Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Process Space on Governor’s Island, the Hermitage Artist Retreat, CalArts Center for New Performance and most recently, a development and technical residency at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI. With funding from the Asian Cultural Council, Artistic Director Jessica Grindstaff spent 3 months in Japan this past spring, traveling to Fukushima and Northern Tokohu to experience the aftermath of the devastation, interview residents, scholars and scientists and capture original video and audio for use in the production design. We are now ready to synthesize all we have learned to bring FALLING OUT to life and share it with our audiences.
